Furniture Design: Greene & Greene and Beyond with Darrell Peart (4/7/13)
This class is intended as an introduction to furniture design from Darrell’s perspective, which is heavily influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement and by Greene & Greene. While much of the discussion will revolve around the designs of Greene & Greene – it will not be limited to such.
Attendees will be asked to obtain William Varnum’s book “Arts & Crafts Design” and read chapters two through four prior to attending the class. After which each student is asked bring a sketch (their own design) to class for review. The class discussion will start with some basic rules of design and a slide show illustrating examples of basic proportioning and balance.
While Darrell acknowledges that the rules of design as valid, he also believes the rules must ultimately be laid aside in favor of intuition. This class will offer some basic rules to get started as well as strategies for breaking away and relying upon your intuition.
William Ng comes from an engineering background and uses a similar approach in his woodworking. Precision, accuracy and efficiency are emphasized in his teaching. His sense of humor, combined with his passion for woodworking makes for an enjoyable learning experience.
