This beautiful table is well proportioned, with simple elegant lines that will grace any home. It can be used as a hall table, sofa table or an entry table. Imagine what your guest will say when they are welcome into your home and met with this stunning piece of furniture. The table will be constructed using African Mahogany and Ebony. Wood will be prepared and rough milled to speed up the process. This will free up valuable time for learning different skills and techniques. We will cover wood movement, bread board, joinery, wood selection, exposed Ebony spline, Ebony inlay, leg indent detail, square ebony plug, dovetail drawer construction, hand fitting drawers for piston fit, glue up procedure to make sure all 8 legs hit the floor the same time, hand tool techniques such as sharpening and proper use of chisels, card scrapers and hand planes. Come prepared to challenge your skills. There’s a lot of woodworking and learning in these six days.

Where the actual tool does what you want it to do with ease. You should not have to fight with your tools. They should work for you and with you. In this class, we will cover a variety of techniques for sharpening edge tools including the use of Japanese water stones. We will sharpen a bevel-edged chisel, a plane iron and a cabinet scraper. You will learn how to flatten, grind and hone your tools until they are razor-sharp. I will also demonstrate a few simple tricks in adjusting your hand planes that will enable you to take shavings to a thousand of an inch. By the end of this class you will have much confidence with your hand tools and will be reaching for them more often.

With high-tech machines and power tools, these fundamentals can be overshadowed. In this class we will learn the values of design, drawings, mock-ups, sharpening, care and use of hand tools, tuning up a bench plane, layout, measuring tools, wood technology, choosing and preparing lumber, joinery (including hand cut dovetails and the mortise and tenon), safe machine and power tool operation and how to apply a hand-rubbed finish. We will practice these skills by building a beautiful keepsake box. This class is not just for beginners but for all those who want to build a more solid woodworking foundation.

There are many questions about proper bending materials, adhesives and veneering techniques that will be covered and practiced during these two days, and should be an very informative two day class for every level of woodworker aspiring to throw a curve into their next project!
- Designing with curves.
- Creating curved clamping cauls and preparing bending plywood.
- Understanding vacuum and laminating technology.
- Gluing up a curved panel with veneer.
- Sanding and finishing of a curved surface.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this class at : paul@schurchwoodwork.com and I look forward to working with you soon!

I will cover the challenges and considerations of combining solid woodwork with veneer work, and give each student instruction and hands-on experience working with both mediums on this box project. The objective for this class is to understand the process of fine box design and create a beautiful and mechanically sound frame, make a wood marquetry picture using simple hand tools, a scroll saw, and use proven veneer assembly and glue-up techniques to complete the project. There will be a variety of marquetry patterns to choose from, or I will instruct you how to draw one, for use on your box project.

The first day will be dedicated to finalizing the box design, selecting the veneers and hardwoods each student will be using, and begin milling.

The second day will be dedicated to constructing the box, gluing it together, sanding, fitting the components and beginning creating the marquetry lid.

The third day we complete the marquetry and glue up the panel.

The forth and fifth day we combine the panel and frame, hinge the lid, dress out the interior and finish the box with oil or lacquer.

Each student should have some basic woodworking knowledge in order to safely complete the project during the week. There is no veneering or marquetry knowledge required for this class, however, I recommend that each student review my book ‘Decorative Veneering’ and watch the accompanying DVD on prior to the class, since it is my experience that the more knowledge you gain prior to class, the exponentially further you will progress. The class size is limited to twelve people and the blueprints, hardware, tools, supplies and other material needed for this class will be provided on the first day, which are included in your material fee. Other useful marquetry tools, supplies and veneer will be available for purchase at the end of this one week seminar.

It’s where most woodworking is done. A good workbench will provide stability and numerous options in securing your work for those critical woodworking moments. Some of the construction methods will include making large mortise and tenons, cutting angled square dog holes, milling, gluing and assembly. This workbench will be constructed with the finest hard maple and will be complimented with a quality face vise and the twin screw vise by Veritas. This bench can be built to last and be passed on for generations with pride. Early registration is required so that we have ample time to order all materials.
